A retreat is an important way of deepening our meditation practice and getting in touch with the kind of stillness that can only come from an extended period away from our day-to-day life. 

This beginners' retreat will balance periods of silent meditation, workshop discussions and regular breaks. Designed for people attending their first retreat, this weekend opens with an introduction to meditation and sets aside time for personalized and individual attention.

The theme for this retreat will be, "Living the 8 Fold Path; The Buddha's prescription for a harmonious life."

* Zazen (Zen Meditation) periods for this retreat are 25 minutes of sitting meditation broken up with 5 minutes of walking meditation where one can stretch or take a bathroom/coffee break. 

Accommodations, Details & Logistics  

ZHP is not a profit driven effort and when we do need to charge for something like retreats we strive to be as reasonably priced as possible. We find an affordable location, add the cost of food and share that burden equally among the retreat participants. This serves to make our retreats more accessible than those found at typical retreat centers. It also means our group is counting on your participation and consequently there are no refunds once we are 7 days out from the retreat.  

This retreat is located at a quiet suburban home, about an hour north of New York City in Fairfield, Connecticut. It is 8 bedroom home, with 4 baths. The property is at the bottom of a cul da sac and is a mile away from the beach and a nature preserve.  

I have negotiated with the owner a weekend rental price of $1,200 and I assume about $25 per person for food. I've set a max of 10-12 participants. The resulting retreat price will be $165 per person or $265 for a couple sharing a bed.  

For individuals flying into JFK, we are coordinating rides to the retreat house. We are a small group and any special food accommodations can be met. This location is not wheelchair friendly. This retreat is about wellness and there will be no drinking or drugs during the weekend. 

Retreat Instructor

The retreat will be led by Anthony Cernera, M.Ed., who is the founder and lead meditation instructor of the Zen Happiness Project. Anthony started meditating in 2007, took vows as a Zen Student in 2009 and started organizing retreats and sitting groups in 2010 which inspired the creation of the Zen Happiness Project.
